Storyline
The show is set in an alternate, 21st-century Korea which has retained its monarchy and imperial family since 1945.
One day, Shin Chae-kyeong (Yoon Eun-hye) receives an unexpected news that she is to marry Crown Prince Lee Shin (Ju Ji-hoon) - they attend the same high school - based on both grandfathers' wills. Chae-kyeong reluctantly agrees to help her debt-ridden family.
Lee Shin is in love with Min Hyo-rin (Song Ji-hyo) but she rejected his proposal. When Hyo-rin realises that Lee Shin is going to marry Chae-kyong, she regrets her action. Hyo-rin finds means to win back Lee Shin. However, the arrogant Lee Shin has slowly falls for a bubbly Chae-kyeong.
The palace matters are further complicated with the return of Prince Lee Yul (Kim Jeong-hoon) and his mother, Lady Hwa-young (Shin Hye-jin). Lady Hwa-young was once the Crown Princess before the death of the late Crown Prince Lee Soo.
Lee Yul and his mother were driven out of the palace. Lady Hwa-young vows to restore her son's place which she believes remains rightfully his.
My View
Goong is a new kind of modern historical period drama which is pretty refreshing.
